Chiddy Now Holds The Guinness World Record for Longest Freestyle Rap (9 Hours And 18 Minutes).

Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege (of Chiddy Bang) broke the Guinness World Record for Longest Freestyle Rap during the first MTV_O Awards. Chiddy rapped for 9 hours and 18 minutes, beating previous record holder M-Eighty (who had rapped for 9 hours and 15 minutes in 2009).

Chiddy also set a new record for Longest Marathon Rapping – he beat out D.O, who had once managed to rap for 8 hours and 45 minutes.

Below you have the final minutes of Chiddy’s rap. You will notice he looks a lot at a screen. What he is reading is words that people are tweeting in real time to give him some inspiration. He sort of loses it towards the end (which is entirely logical – he had been at it for 9 hours), but he manages to pick up the pace for a rallying finale.

“Judas”, The New Video By Lady Gaga Is Officially Released

"Judas" Is Taken From Lady Gaga's New Album, "Born This Way". The Album Is Hitting Stores On The 23rd Of May.

Lady Gaga’s new video was made officially available on VEVO, just a couple of hours after it had leaked.

The song in question (“Judas”) generated a lot of buzz, if only because a song which such a name seemed tailor-made for Gaga’s own concept of religion.

But now that the video has become available, it is fair to say that the clip breaks no new ground in any sense. It is just more of the usual raciness.

Fans of James Bond movies and spy flicks on the whole will love the lipstick gun, though.

Is Gaga’s star beginning to set? Mmmh…

Month In Review – April 2011

April was the month in which I began a feature that is going to run well into the coming months. Named “Musicians Around The World”, it is devoted to chronicling the lives of both Uruguayans who are traveling abroad, and foreign performers who come to Uruguay in order to promote (and develop) their art. The first artist I covered was Uruguayan singer/composer Florencia Cano, and you can read the full interview here.

And I wrote what I think was a pretty spiffy post on Casablancas, an independent Uruguayan band that is about to embark on a tour of Brazil as I am writing this. Way to go, guys!

October saw Roxette playing in Uruguay for the first time in 19 years, and I was lucky enough to be there. It was a night to remember – read my coverage of the show.

The music startups that I got to review in April were GigValley, Viral Music List, 1Band1Brand and LyricsGaps – all of them killer ideas, all of them sparkling with originality. And just yesterday I finished posting the conversation I had with Miguel Martín from LyricsGaps – take a look.

Max Mathews Passes Away At 84

Max Mathews (1926 - 2011).

Max Mathews (1926 - 2011).

The man who was unanimously regarded as the father of digital music passed away last week. Born in 1926, Max Mathews was a relentless innovator in the world of computer-generated music.

Employed at Bell Laboratories, he both created devices and wrote software applications of which the most popular was probably “Music” (1957). That software basically allowed an IBM 704 mainframe computer to play short jams.

Mathews passed away at his home in San Francisco on the morning of April the 21st. I have embedded a short video below in which he talks about the future of musical instruments. This video was actually shot last year at SF MusicTech Summit – it is one of his final major public appearances.

Dream Theater Turns The Search Of A New Drummer Into A Whole Social Experience

Dream Theater Has Managed To Turn The Departure Of Original Member Mike Portnoy Into A True Publicity Magnet.

Dream Theater Has Managed To Turn The Departure Of Original Member Mike Portnoy Into A True Publicity Magnet.

Who could have guessed that Dream Theater would be able to turn the loss of a mainstay like drummer Mike Portnoy into something that could actually draw new fans in?

Because that is exactly what the epic metal band has done. It has engaged people on Facebook with a video page that prompts them to “Like” it in order to know how the search for Portnoy’s replacement has been going (the band has tested seven drummers so far).

And in an even cleverer move, fans who want to know the identity of the new drummer can submit their email addresses, and be notified the minute the decision has been taken by the band.

All in all, this is unarguably one of the cleverest uses of the “Like gate” method on Facebook yet seen. The band has been getting fans (and presumably email addresses) by the bucketload. Of course, this move has been so effective because Dream Theater is nothing short of a standard-bearer of excellence. People were bound to be interested in what they were offering. But the way in which the band is playing with intrigue is nothing short of ingenious.

Weird Al Yankovic Parodies Lady GaGa’s “Born This Way”

For those who can’t stand Lady GaGa, it doesn’t get much funnier that this…

Weird Al Yankovic has just recorded and uploaded a parody of GaGa’s newest single (“Born This Way”) to his YouTube channel.

This parody is named “Perform This Way”, and it basically pokes fun at Lady GaGa’s flamboyant stage antics. It also puts its finger on the similarities between Gaga’s song and Maddona’s “Express Yourself” – something that will have the nay-sayers frenziedly clapping their hands in approval.

“Perform This Way” is going to be the leadoff single of Weird Al Yankovic’s new album, “ALPOCALYPSE” (out on June 21).

Spotify Will Begin Limiting The Free Streaming Of Music

Beginning In May, Spotify Will Put Some Serious Limitations On The Free Streaming Of Music

Beginning In May, Spotify Will Put Some Serious Limitations On The Free Streaming Of Music

People outside of the US resort to Spotify to satisfy their musical cravings time and again. Which makes just too much sense, really – it is a free streaming service that gives you access to the best music around, right as it surfaces.

However, Spotify recently announced a series of measures that (to all intent and purposes) will translate into the end of the free, limitless service users knew and loved.

Basically, new free users of Spotify will be able to listen to music at no cost for six months only. After that, they will become limited to listening to just 10 hours of free music per month.

People are up in arms over this. It is understandable – who wouldn’t become all angry if he had to begin paying for something he previously had for free? Yet, once one begins putting two and two together it is easy to understand why did this happen. Continue reading

If Napster Had Never Existed…

…things would have been a bed of roses for the music industry. Well, that is what most major labels think. They presented a graph in the recent litigation against LimeWire that drove the point home.

napster album sales

Napster Killed The Radio Star...

This is open to endless debate and speculation, of course. Did sales fall by the wayside because music was being pirated, or because the music that many artists were pumping out was substandard? Speak your mind in the “Comments” box below – let it all out…

How To Use Social Media To Become Famous

famous musicianIf used correctly, social media can break you into the music industry not only faster but also far more notoriously. Rebecca Black is the latest example of Internet stardom, and when you know the full facts and how much money it actually took her to get the video for “Friday” together ($ 4000 – her mother paid for it) then the one conclusion to be reached is that just anybody can do it.

And Rebecca Black is also a perfectly illustrative example if only because she has fallen prey to the derision that always besets such artists, with her “hit” quickly becoming the most-hated song on the Internet (it has almost 2 million “dislikes”, as opposed to 250,000 “likes”)

So, how could these pitfalls be avoided? How can a social presence be established and nurtured in the healthiest way of all?

I think that a basic analysis would let us agree on the following points:

1) Make sure you are picking the right social site.

Should you go for MySpace or Facebook in order to begin promoting your art? Up until now, MySpace used to be the social site of choice for musicians. Yet, the network has recently withstood one blow after the other – its userbase has been dwindling (owing in no small part to the proliferation of platforms like Bandcamp and ReverbNation), and key staff has been rotating to the point it’s downright difficult to keep track of all comings and goings. The coup d’ grace came last week, as owner Rupert Murdoch announced that he was putting the site for sale (and for a pittance of its real value at that).

When pressed to make a choice, Internet artists like Lady Gaga have always gone for Facebook. Just compare Gaga’s 1.5 million friends on MySpace to the more than 31 million “likes” she has on Facebook. And Gaga actually makes extensive use of her Twitter account, just like Justin Bieber does. Doing cross over content is an integral part of the game, and micro-sharing platforms like Twitter are always used in tandem with social networking sites to truly connect with audiences.

2) Know how to market your music intelligently.

Upload tracks for your fans to listen at no cost. If you are an unknown, not many would be willing to pay for the privilege of listening to your songs. By letting them listen to what you do for free, you will be giving people the impression that all you really want to do is spread your message, regardless of monetary considerations. And that’s all the encouragement many would need to try your music out. Continue reading

The Beastie Boys Release Their Latest Song On Tumblr

The Beastie Boys Have Turned To Tumblr To Promote Their Latest Song (“Make Some Noise”)

The Beastie Boys Have Turned To Tumblr To Promote Their Latest Song (“Make Some Noise”)

The Beastie Boys have chosen to release their newest song (“Make Some Noise”) online, well ahead of their next album (which is yet to be named). That’s nothing new. However, what makes this prerelease special is the service the boys have gone for.

You see, they are not sharing the song via MySpace or Facebook. They aren’t even sharing it on YouTube. Rather, the service they have chosen is no other than Tumblr.

That’s certainly big news for the microblogging platform – or is it? If you take a good look around, you will learn that the service is growing by a quarter billion impressions every week. It was only natural that some rock stars would begin taking to it to promote their art.

What do you think will happen next? Are more and more artists going to begin following suit? Or will they just stick to Facebook and MySpace for promoting ther music? Comment, people!
