RecooME – In Search Of The Ultimate Playlists

http://www.recoo.me

Name: RecooME
URL: http://www.recoo.me

We all know the place to look for playlists online is Last.fm, but those who want to try something a little bit different are well-advised to give this website a try.

RecooME is a social network for the sharing of music and songs. Here, people can recommend these songs they can’t get out of their heads. And these recommendations are what give this site its edge, as people not only follow each other around and see what they are listening to, but also rate what others have shared.

The objective of all this sharing and rating is to eventually let people figure out which the best songs within any given genre are. The idea is that the playlists arrived at on RecooME are nothing but a vivid snapshot of the tastes of people at the moment in time they were created. Continue reading

1Band1Brand – New Bands & Fashion Brands

1band1brand

Name: 1Band1Brand
URL: http://www.1band1brand.com

This is one for the music lovers among you who are also style-minded. 1Band1Brand is quite a unique site in which both emerging bands and fashion brands get a chance to become more widespread.

In essence, this site introduces people to one band and one fashion brand per week. The band sells a sampler (whose price is actually determined by each buyer), and the fashion brand offers a bargain.

And the means are provided for promoting anything that is bought through the site all over the Social Web – Facebook and Twitter are extensively supported, so that band (and brand) advocacy is radically simplified. Which is the aim of the site, really – making early adopters set the scene for a much larger audience.

Viral Music List.com – Learn How Viral Your Favorite Music Really Is

ViralMusicList

Name: Viral Music List
URL: http://www.viralmusiclist.com

There are two types of music listeners: those who revel in exclusivity (and consume nothing but songs by obscure bands), and the ones who get their kicks only by listening to what lots and lots of people listen to.

If you fall in the former category and live in Uruguay (like I do) you buy compilations of underground/indie/emerging bands from America and Britain, and then drive all your friends off the bend by harping on Okkervil River, Bear In Heaven and The Antlers.

And if the latter group is where you belong, then you turn to a service like Viral Music Lists for approbation.

What this site does is to let you know which songs have gone viral. You can do that by picking one of the three main categories (“Tracks”, “Albums” and “Artists”) and then setting down the time range that applies (the provided options are ”24 Hours”, “7 Days” and “All Time”). And you can also launch an artist-specific search, and see how these musicians you love are doing in terms of online popularity. Continue reading

LyricsGaps – Learn Languages By Listening To Songs

LyricsGap

Name: LyricsGaps
URL: http://www.lyricsgaps.com

“Music is the doctor of my soul”. That’s what the Doobie Brothers once sang. And it’s something that is more or less carved in stone. Yet, music can take on other professional roles. Preeminently among them is the role of teacher. I mean, just look at the number of people who have learned English by listening to songs. OK, maybe the word “learn” is too much. Nobody becomes a fountain of knowledge by listening to songs by contemporary musicians. But there’s no denying that he will build up a more than respectable vocabulary, and revise his existing word lists that much easier.

Well, he certainly will as long as he has a site like this one at hand. LyricsGaps lets anybody pick up new words by listening to music. The idea is that people choose a language from the many that are offered (including English, Spanish, Italian and French) and pick new vocabulary up by completing blanks in the lyrics of songs in such languages. GigValley – Like Facebook, But Only For Bands

GigValley

Name: GigValley
URL: http://www.gigvalley.com

I can’t help but wonder what’s in store for rock & roll biographies. I mean, up to today every single one I’ve read (from Dave Marsh’s “Before I Get Old” to Chris Twomey’s “Chalkhills And Children”) devoted a copious amount of pages to how the band members met, and how they fought against all odds to pinch a record deal.

But today, social networking sites have everybody rocking to a very, very different beat. The trials and tribulations musicians used to go through (and that we read about time and again on bios) are going to disappear for good.

Trying to get a band together? A couple of posts on Facebook will get you started, and in 8 out of 10 cases take you more than halfway through.

Looking for a way to contact some record execs or A & R men directly? A handful of updates on Twitter might just put you face to face with the right industry names.

And a visit to a site like this one is going to get you ahead even faster than that. Continue reading

Find You Some Vinyl – A Search Engine For Nothing But LPs

FindYouSomeVinyl

Name: Find You Some Vinyl
URL: http://www.findyousomevinyl.com

Find You Some Vinyl is a young search engine that lets people find LPs both old and new by simply furnishing the name of the band and/or artist they are after. The site premiered at the last Music Hack Day in New York City, and it has merited mostly positive reviews if only because there’s nothing else like it around.

Granted, a site like Amazon has a large collection of vinyl on offer. Yet, the creator of this site is trying to bring together the results from smaller retailers such as Insound, Interpunk and Boomkat. That is not saying Find You Some Vinyl ignores Amazon – it doesn’t, it is one of the services that are crawled. It’s just that the emphasis here is on letting people look beyond that, and end up finding these truly rare records that (for the most part) are only found in the possession of reclusive collectors, hid in a chest with three big padlocks and a good couple of booby traps around. Music Lunge – Social Network For Indie Musicians & Performers

MusicLunge

Name: Music Lunge
URL: http://www.musiclunge.com

Music Lunge is a new social networking site for musicians. Although the title of this post suggests indie performers are the ones that would get the most out of it, the truth is that this network is also going to be of help to all majors who want to promote their art.

On Music Lunge, just anybody can create a profile and become discovered both by the public and by other performers. What’s more, those who use the site can find music industry professionals that much faster. This includes not only managers and music editors, but also attorneys and promotion agents. Like.fm – Share The Songs You Like With Your Facebook Friends

http://www.like.fm

Name: Like.fm
URL: http://www.like.fm

Like.fm is a new music discovery app. It has already been termed a shareable version of iTunes on some tech blogs, and that’s pretty accurate as Like.fm can track all the music that you are playing and generate a list with your favorite songs. This list will then be shared with all your friends.

And when I say “all your friends”, you should take that literally – Like.fm uses your Facebook account in order to work. All your social network friends who also have the app installed (and who choose to follow you) will receive this automatically-generated list, and learn first-hand which music you love best.

Still, it’s important to mention that not simply because you have played something that particular song will be part of your list. When using Like.fm, you are actually empowered to remove tracks manually from the finished list before it is sent to all the people who are following you. Continue reading

Jog.fm – Music To Listen To While Running, Walking & Cycling

Jog.fm

Name: Jog.fm
URL: http://www.jog.fm

Jog.fm is a site where you can get music to listen to while you are exercising. So far, three different activities are supported: running, walking and cycling. In all three cases, music is found simply by specifying your actual kilometer time for Jog.fm to come up with a suitable playlist.

Alternatively, you can browse through these playlists that other people have favorited and download the ones which are more popular directly.

And in addition to providing you with music to enliven your trots up and down the city, the site features a route planning application. This will let you add points one by one until you have devised a route that will test your endurance to the limit. Or (if you are a bit like me) one that will take you through all the trendiest spots in town. As long as you are exercising as intended, I suppose that it makes no difference, right?

Right?

Fans Forever And Ever – Build A Creepy Fanpage For The Band You Love

http://fansforeverandever.com

Name: Fans Forever And Ever
URL: http://fansforeverandever.com

Fans Forever And Ever is a new service that was created on the recent Music Hack Day in New York. What it does is to let you generate a fanpage for any band you could think of. “Big deal”, I hear you say. “I can get myself a blog and do that any old day”.

Well, the thing with Fans Forever And Ever is that it can come up with fanpages resembling those that Geocities let people create back in the day. These look completely out of place today (Yahoo pulled the plug on Geocities last year), and such pages have a truly obsessive feel to them.

They feature archaic designs, and they are generated just by supplying the name of the band in question, and they include lyrics, pictures, poems and the kind of content only those that go through their idols’ garbage would include on a fanpage.

Don’t believe it? Well, just to settle the discussion of how creepy a page created through this service can be, I’ll tell you what happened when I tried it.

I used this service to create three independent Who fanpages.

And in all three cases, the lyric that was automatically highlighted was no other than “Uncle Ernie”.

Believe me, folks… a Who fanpage can’t get any gloomier.
