How To Play The 30 Day Song Challenge On Facebook

I see many people have visited MusicKO as of late looking for information on how to play the 30 Day Song Challenge on Facebook. The post I recently published where I highlighted my 30 days of music seems to have motivated that.

I recall that I also had trouble getting started, so I decided to write this post. It basically tells you what to do in order to start posting videos once you have liked the page itself on Facebook.

This is the way it’s done:

1) Log in to Facebook.
2) Go to YouTube, and look up the video you want to post for that particular day.
3) Click on “Share”.
4) Click on the Facebook icon. This will open up a pop up (E, a separate window) that you will use to post the video to Facebook. This is done by addressing 30 Day Song Challenge (@30 Day Song Challenge), and then pasting (or typing) the information for that specific day (as found on the “Rules” section of the 30 Day Song Challenge page). This is the step that can confuse people. Look, a picture is worth a thousand words:

This Is How Videos Are Posted To Facebook When Playing The 30 Day Song Challenge

There. It wasn’t that tricky, was it? But we all definitely agree this info should be provided on the 30 Day Song Challenge page itself.

Just for your information, Divididos is a band from Argentina, No Te Va Gustar is from my country (Uruguay) and “Aozora” is a song from the anime “Air” (a great yet depressing show).

And yes, I know who is on day number 13. I wrote so many posts about him that the song wound up nestled in my head.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa…

The “Music On Facebook” Page Relaunches

Musiconfacebook

Back in 2008, Facebook launched a page for musicians. There, both established and up-and-coming acts were promoted in a bid to make new convert along the way.

At least, that was how things looked on paper. The truth was that MySpace was still the prevalent social site for musicians and music lovers to interact.

Fast forward to the year 2011, and the landscape has been drastically modified. The future of MySpace looks grimmer than ever, and Facebook is going from strength to strength. Its latest incursion into the world of email has met with interest and even outright enthusiasm in some quarters.

And now that MySpace is sinking in the rear view mirror, the Palo Alto company is aiming for the one trophy it could not only take from it back in the day: being the network of choice for musicians. Continue reading

Dream Theater Turns The Search Of A New Drummer Into A Whole Social Experience

Dream Theater Has Managed To Turn The Departure Of Original Member Mike Portnoy Into A True Publicity Magnet.

Dream Theater Has Managed To Turn The Departure Of Original Member Mike Portnoy Into A True Publicity Magnet.

Who could have guessed that Dream Theater would be able to turn the loss of a mainstay like drummer Mike Portnoy into something that could actually draw new fans in?

Because that is exactly what the epic metal band has done. It has engaged people on Facebook with a video page that prompts them to “Like” it in order to know how the search for Portnoy’s replacement has been going (the band has tested seven drummers so far).

And in an even cleverer move, fans who want to know the identity of the new drummer can submit their email addresses, and be notified the minute the decision has been taken by the band.

All in all, this is unarguably one of the cleverest uses of the “Like gate” method on Facebook yet seen. The band has been getting fans (and presumably email addresses) by the bucketload. Of course, this move has been so effective because Dream Theater is nothing short of a standard-bearer of excellence. People were bound to be interested in what they were offering. But the way in which the band is playing with intrigue is nothing short of ingenious.

Viral Music List.com – Learn How Viral Your Favorite Music Really Is

ViralMusicList

Name: Viral Music List
URL: http://www.viralmusiclist.com

There are two types of music listeners: those who revel in exclusivity (and consume nothing but songs by obscure bands), and the ones who get their kicks only by listening to what lots and lots of people listen to.

If you fall in the former category and live in Uruguay (like I do) you buy compilations of underground/indie/emerging bands from America and Britain, and then drive all your friends off the bend by harping on Okkervil River, Bear In Heaven and The Antlers.

And if the latter group is where you belong, then you turn to a service like Viral Music Lists for approbation.

What this site does is to let you know which songs have gone viral. You can do that by picking one of the three main categories (“Tracks”, “Albums” and “Artists”) and then setting down the time range that applies (the provided options are ”24 Hours”, “7 Days” and “All Time”). And you can also launch an artist-specific search, and see how these musicians you love are doing in terms of online popularity. Continue reading

Vote For Your Favorite American Idol Using Facebook

From Next Thursday On, You Will Be Able To Vote For Your Favorite American Idol Using Facebook

You Will Now Be Able To Vote For Your Favorite American Idol Using Facebook

American Idol is about to unveil a dedicated Facebook page letting fans vote for their favorite contestants.

The idea is that they will be allowed to cast their ballots up to 50 times during the designated voting period for each broadcast.

This comes across as a really appealing alternative to the clogged lines and busy signals that most of us have experienced when trying to vote for “our” idol. Not to say that anything which keeps these relentless SMS marketers at bay is nothing short of heaven-sent.

If all goes well, online voting will be implemented for the very next installment of American Idol (March 1).

Bandhack – Local Bands On Facebook

bandhack

Name: Bandhack
URL: http://www.bandhack.com

Bandhack is a directory of local bands and shows on Facebook. Through this site, you will be able to know all about these bands that are coming together right where you live, and about the activity of the ones that are already well-established. You’ll get to know about their upcoming gigs, and you’ll also get your hands on their latest media (including videos and audio recordings)

To me, what gives Bandhack its edge is that the content is pulled directly from the pages of the bands in question. This means that the content is always up-to-date – if there’s any kind of change in schedules, for example, that will be reflected immediately on Bandhack.

And using the site is a piece of cake. You just log in with your Facebook account, and all the relevant local activity becomes accessible in a snap.

A New Song About Facebook Hits The Web

The Latest Single Issued By Bulgarian Star Gergana Is A Song Dealing With Romance (And Infatuation) On The Social Site Of The Hour.

The Latest Single Issued By Bulgarian Star Gergana Is A Song Dealing With Romance (And Infatuation) On The Social Site Of The Hour.

Do you remember Ismael YK’s “Cilgin” video (IE, the one I nominated as the most likely candidate for the Turkish rickroll)? It was featured on MusicKO way back in September.

Well, those of you who did like it back then (or who have taken a liking to it right now after clicking on the link above) are sure to appreciate this new one from Bulgarian start Gergana.

The song is simply called “Facebook”, and (much like Ismael YK’s clip) it tells a story of infatuation that takes place over the Social Web.

So, which one do you prefer? I know, I know. This is nowhere as interesting as something like the “XTC Vs. Adam Ant” debate that They Might Be Giants once postulated. I am the first to admit that it is hardly in the same league. But I am really curious to see which one you like best.

The Social Network Gets Its First Video Parody By Jay Kila the Viral Rapper

“The Social Network” Opened To Glowing Reviews Despite Being Labeled By Those In The Know As Inaccurate

“The Social Network” Opened To Glowing Reviews Despite Being Labeled By Those In The Know As Inaccurate

What do you get when a movie that was as hyped as “The Social Network” finally launches? You get lots of coverage on tech blogs, you get reviews by critics, you get user reviews on sites like Rotten Tomatoes… but most of all, you get music parodies.

This rap by Jay Kila the Viral Rapper is one of these. The song is named “CEO (The Social Network Rap)”, and the lyrics are so funny that I have embedded them below along with the actual clip.

Enjoy!

CEO (The Social Network Rap)

They call me Young Zuck just a punk
Tryna be in finals clubs no girls showin’ me love
But I don’t give a fuck
I was made to be great facemashin’ all my dates
As I crash the network — college aged Bill Gates
Not really a creep — okay, maybe social geek
You can check out my blog I’m telling it when I speak
Programmin up in my sleep I don’t got many peeps
For friends — Eduardo he was one of them
I guess — yes, well lemme get this off my chest
I believe I’m the best when it comes to CS
Facebook — yo, that was my idea
Don’t let them Winklevosses tell you that I steal
For real. I got the Napster as my bro
And he knows that this thing is about to blow
So I’ma hop on a plane to Palo Alto
Call up Peter Thief and well…you know

Chorus:
I’ll be C.E.O (yo!) x 2

Couple years go by I’m worth a couple of bill
And all these haters want a piece they jus need to chill
I look back on the site I was about to build
And never thought or dreamed that it could be this ill
I still got Asian groupies giving me brain
But now the phoenix is the name of my private plane
I abstain from doin’ drugs cuz I know cocaine
Can really cause some peeps to go kind of insane
But it’s kind of okay yea I’ve made mistakes
500 million friends ain’t that easy to make
I went from wiring in to be in Wired magazine
And there’s no AEPI when I fly Caribbean
Facebook — yo, it was meant to be
A social network expert or my destiny
jus a hacker turned legit a slacker and misfit
But my business cards say I’m C.E.O bitch
