Pretty much like you and me, that’s how. Just take a look at his personal Tumblr, “Confessions of a Michael Stipe”. He abides by the same rules as any old Joe. The frontman of the “fathers of alt rock” has no special privileges or treatment of any kind when it comes to the creative work he makes public there.

Stipe has recently remarked that his personal Tumblr actually represents the “real” him – it’s not subject to people’s preconceptions, and no record company exerts the slightest influence on what he decides to publish.

Stipe also says he picked that name because of its ironic value. “This might not be the Michael Stipe that you think you know,” he said, “this is actually me”.

An application that is available internationally, JamCloud is here to let all of us play music and watch videos with all our friends in real time. No doubt inspired by the concept of Google Plus hangouts, JamCloud enables people in any corner of the world to create and join listening rooms for free. And the people who do convene in any of these rooms can not only listen to the music others are playing, but also communicate among themselves thanks to a built-in messaging tool.

What’s more, the music that is played in any room can be voted both positively and negatively. That should let people who land on any room which is mighty crowded figure out which music is worth a try, and which is not really worth the hassle.

Currently, JamCloud has a database of over 325 million songs and videos.

And support for services like YouTube, SoundCloud and Facebook means that it’s dead simple to have playlists and individual songs imported right into any room you have joined. It’s all done by clicking and dropping what you want to have shared with others into the relevant box

Now that Spotify is firmly established on American soil, it’s time to see exactly the kind of music that people are not only listening to but also sharing through it.

This infograph (from ShareMyPlaylists.com) sheds some light on that subject. It basically highlights these songs that have been featured on the largest number of Spotify playlists so far.

Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us” is on top with a whooping 7567 total shares. And the second and third place are taken by “Like A G6” (Far East Movement) and “Sexy Bitch” (David Guetta and Akon).

Swift.fm Relaunches As A Platform For Sharing Music In A More Global Way

The name of Swift.fm might as well be familiar to those of you who are active on the Twitterverse. The site launched about one year and a half ago, and it basically stood as a Twitter-powered platform for the sharing of songs. Then again, you might not. It didn’t pick that much traction, despite some famous musicians (most notably rappers) singing it praises. Well, Swift.fm is back with a vengeance – the whole platform has been revamped in order to let people share music on practically all the main social networking sites available today.

 

 

This is how it works. People who join Swift.fm (it costs nothing) can link their MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm accounts together, and share their own music (and the music that they have discovered online) with everybody and his wife. That is, provided everybody and/or his wife can access the Internet in one way or the other. But I think we can count on that in this day and age, right?

Like.fm is a new music discovery app. It has already been termed a shareable version of iTunes on some tech blogs, and that’s pretty accurate as Like.fm can track all the music that you are playing and generate a list with your favorite songs. This list will then be shared with all your friends.

And when I say “all your friends”, you should take that literally – Like.fm uses your Facebook account in order to work. All your social network friends who also have the app installed (and who choose to follow you) will receive this automatically-generated list, and learn first-hand which music you love best.

Still, it’s important to mention that not simply because you have played something that particular song will be part of your list. When people talk about Internet artists, they often fail to see beyond the likes of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber – artists whose careers have been clearly shaped and/or established through sites like YouTube and Facebook. To them, a band like REM hardly factors into the equation. But that is about to change…

The fathers of alt rock are to release a new album (“Collapse Into Now”) in one month’s time. And in order to start putting it on the map, they have come with quite an interesting scheme.

Basically, fans can remix the track “It Happened Today” and upload their own work to the Internet for others to listen. The remixing itself is done using Garageband (the music mixing software that all new Macs come with), and the files are uploaded to SoundCloud under a Creative Commons license.

Results range from the tuneful to the bizarre.

Ahh, if only that question had a univocal answer… But nothing is ever that simple.

Well, it doesn’t need to be as hard as not laughing at Miley Cyrus’ “rebellious” self either. Check the infograph included below (originally published on tech blog Mashable), and see if you can learn (and put to effective use) a thing or two.

Part of the information is obvious (like the shorter the clip, the more likely it will be to be passed along), and part of it is obvious and impressive at the same time – Facebook amounts to as much as three-quarters of online shares of video clips. That is more than Twitter and email taken together. But thing like “Southerners watch and Midwesterners share” are sure to come as revelatory to many.
